On September 16, 1820, at the congress of natural scientists in Halle, the professor of the University of Halle, Johann Schweiger (1779–1857) first showed the “multiplier” — the first current meter based on the deviation of the magnetic needle of a compass in a field of wire twisted in a coil of several turns, through which the measured current passes. Schweiger owns the term «galvanometer», his device was called «Schweiger’s multiplier»
